Non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Community-based organisations (CBOs) and Faith-based organisations (FBOs) have for a long time played a significant role in contributing to social transformation in South Africa.
In the last few years, however, they have had to function in an increasingly difficult environment, largely due to enormous social challenges, ranging from, among others, HIV/AIDS and gender violence, large-scale unemployment and crime and more and more stringent donor requirements. To be able to fulfil their missions effectively and efficiently NPOs need to develop not only their professional skills, but also their human relationship skills, both within their organisations and in their relationships with their target groups. These skills include the ability to develop authentic leadership among all members of the organisation, to resolve internal conflicts that can severely limit the optimal functioning of the organisation, and to draw on the diversity of the organisation as a resource for creativity and growth.
